How does Virtual GP work?
Most Virtual GP platforms work in a similar way. It involves:
• Downloading Virtual GP app and registering on the platform
• Booking an appointment. Some have same-day appointments (depending on demand), or have the option to book a slot in the near future (usually a few days)
• You may be asked to fill out a form and/or box describing your symptoms for the GP to review
• The Consultation: Your GP will call you directly through the app to start the video consultation, where they can provide a diagnosis, medical advice, and any necessary next steps.
Can I use a virtual GP for a hospital referral?
Yes. If the doctor determines that you need to see a specialist for further treatment or investigation, they can issue a referral letter during your appointment. If you are using the service through your employer (for example, as part of a wider EAP), you will typically receive a private referral letter sent directly to your in-app inbox. You can then download or email this letter to your chosen healthcare provider or insurance company to arrange your specialist care.
