On the 3rd April, organisations of every shape and size will celebrate Walk to Work Day 2020 - the awareness day that encourages employees to incorporate walking into their daily commute.

While our working lives have been turned upside down due to the recent outbreak of COVID-19, there are plenty of ways on how to encourage your team members to get involved with the awareness day, even if they are working from home!

It's evident that there are clear health benefits for your team members who walk more often, however, by employing a more healthy workforce, you will see your organisation become healthier too.

Benefits of healthier employees

Reduced absences: Workplace absence is predicted to cost the UK economy a staggering £26 billion by 2030. While in Ireland, absenteeism currently costs employers around €1.5 billion per annum.

With the above in mind, fitter employees are much less likely to need time off due to sickness, as a healthy body is much better at heading off illnesses, and recovers faster should they fall ill. In turn, investing time in keeping your team members healthier and happier, would be well spent.

Improved productivity: Studies have shown that healthier employees are 25% more likely to have increased performance throughout their day and team members with healthy habits are 3.1 times more productive than their unhealthy peers.

By encouraging your teams to get involved with awareness days such as Walk to Work Day, not only will you fulfil your duty of care towards your workforce, but you will be causing a positive effect on your organisation’s efficiency as well.

Improved workplace wellbeing: The mental health benefits of physical exercise are well known, it reduces stress, releases endorphins and improves self-esteem. However, the average employee is sat down for 8.9 hours per day. This is a problem.

By encouraging more physical activity among your employees, you will see a boost in workplace wellbeing, increased morale and a more engaged workforce.

Walk to Work Day preparations during the COVID-19 outbreak

Many of us are remaining indoors during these turbulent times, which means less of us are getting the same amount of regular exercise than we used too. This is why it’s important for employers to encourage their team members to remain active while at home and think of inventive ways on how they can get involved with awareness days such as Walk to Work day! Here's how...

Involve everyone: Think of inventive ways for all your employees to get involved, even the ones who are working from home. Encourage them to get their steps in at home, for example, walking up and down the stairs several times, laps around the garden or star jumps in the living room. They can track their progress via step counters on their smartphones.

Communication: To ensure all of your team members are kept in the loop, spread the word via email communications in the weeks and days leading up to the event. Focus on the health benefits of walking and offer helpful tips on how to take part e.g. wear comfortable trainers, stay hydrated etc.

Lead by example: Get the best turnout and engagement by leading from the top. Encourage your senior members of staff to get involved and spread the word within their teams. If your team members notice senior figures taking part in the event, they will feel more encouraged to take part.

Get social: Share your organisations' activities on social media with the hashtag #WalkToWorkDay and encourage your team members to do the same. This will help you affirm your stance on supporting your employees’ wellbeing, as well as help you keep your team members stay connected during these trying times.

Make it fun: To get the best response from your team, make the day as fun as possible. Introduce digital leader boards to see who clocks in the most steps on their commute, or go a step further by hosting an awards ceremony at the end of day via webcam. Who knows, Walk to Work Day might become a permanent feature on your wellbeing calendar in the future!

While Walk to Work Day is a great opportunity for organisations to encourage their teams to introduce more physical activity into their routines, it’s important that employers are keep up to date with the latest COVID-19 restrictions and adjust their plans accordingly.
