What is CBT Counselling?
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a talk therapy or psychotherapy which focuses on treating negative thoughts and behaviours. We can use it as a long term and short-term treatment for mental health issues. CBT's meaning and role in psychology is to identify triggers. We use the therapy as stimulus control, where the employee can learn to manage their behaviour and situations better.
Health Assured’s Employee Assistance Programme gives you access to a range of support. Our services and treatments tend to social anxiety disorders, depression and other mental health issues.

How does CBT work with Health Assured?
CBT treatment will differ for each person and the different issues they are facing, but the main framework and goal will remain. CBT can be used to help treat a range of issues, including:
- Bipolar disorder
- Borderline personality disorder
- Eating disorders
- Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)
- Panic disorder
- Phobias
- Post-traumatic stress Disorder (PTSD)
- Psychosis
- Sleep problems
- Problems related to alcohol misuse
It divides our experiences into three key components: thoughts, feelings and behaviours. By looking at how these interact, we can identify how they influence each other.
Sometimes, automatic thoughts become negative and trigger negative feelings and behaviours. This is where CBT can help your employees with internal struggles.
What the employee assistance programme offers
The stages of CBT counselling when using Health Assured

The first time an employee calls up, one of our qualified counsellors will assess them over the phone. An employee may not know they need CBT counselling specifically. Our counsellors will target what they need and match them with their ideal counsellor. They may also help you find a therapist directly.

There will be an appointment with the designated counsellor. Together they will develop rapport and a plan. By identifying how your thoughts attack your core beliefs, they will understand how they need to structure the CBT.

Here at Health Assured, our goal is to get employees healthy and back to work as soon as possible. We use short-term, solution-based counselling. Each counselling service is regular, intensive and effective. This includes our CBT counselling online services, telephone services, and in-person sessions.

The sessions are solution-based, so the counsellor and employee will discuss the progress they have made together. They will then recap any tools they’ve gained to help cope with their issues. This allows the employee to see clear progress and help them cope better with the issues in the future.

CBT techniques and uses
As this is a broad framework, CBT can use several techniques depending on the issue and employee. Techniques, such as exposure therapy or mindfulness, can have CBT techniques implemented into them.
The NHS uses Cognitive Behavioural Therapy in the UK to treat a variety of issues. Many of our skilled, certified therapists focus on CBT because of this. Using our EAP will give you 24/7, 365 access to our counsellors, who can help your organisation with:
- CBT for depression
- CBT for anxiety
- CBT for insomnia
- CBT for social anxiety
- CBT for psychosis
