How to Manage Attitudes in the Workplace

What to do About Negative Attitudes at Work

There are plenty of rules—written and unwritten, social, formal and hierarchical—that govern over the workplace. One of the (usually) unwritten rules: avoid a negative attitude at work.

We understand work can be stressful, with a lot of pressure placed on people. But when this stress piles up on us and our attitude towards work is affected, things can feel harder. This can spill over and affect the people around us in our personal and professional lives.

Here, we’ll examine staff attitude and behaviour—what that means, some examples, and some methods showing you how to deal with difficult employees.

What is an attitude?

Reference to attitude can simply mean an ingrained, consistent way of thinking about an object or concept. This can be a positive or negative attitude.

For example, a negative work attitude may be a sign that someone is dissatisfied, unhappy or otherwise antagonistic toward their role. However, a positive work attitude leads to the opposite.

From this logic, creating happiness in the workplace and maintaining it is essential for a productive working environment. Helping employees maintain a positive attitude will result in good performance, whereas the opposite will result in poor performance.

Why is a positive attitude important at work?

Having a positive attitude at work can increase the likelihood of success at work. While it isn’t a fix for high-quality performance, a positive attitude means employers and employees alike can increase their ability to bounce back (resilience) from difficult situations.

Here are just some of the many benefits of having a positive attitude at work:

  • A better bottom-line

  • Increased resilience

  • Efficient teamwork

  • Increased confidence

The difference between a negative attitude and a bad mood

Everyone has good days and bad days at work. This could be caused by losing a client, a poor presentation or even having a frustrating commute.

A bad attitude, however, is typically a state of mind, and it has the potential to permeate a workplace and create a negative environment. As a manager, you may need to choose between redirecting behaviour, placing them on a personal improvement plan, or letting a team member with bad attitude go.

What are some examples of workplace attitudes?

Attitude at work can be good, though when being discussed it will usually be about a poor attitude. It is important to recognise both types. It has a significant impact on a workplace, including productivity levels and morale.

Positive attitude at work examples

  • Loyalty
  • Leadership
  • A willingness to go above and beyond
  • Positive mood
  • Mentoring
  • Integrity

Negative attitude at work examples

  • Tardiness

  • A ‘that’ll do’ approach

  • Rudeness towards others

  • Blame

  • Disruption

  • Showing a lack of responsibility

From just these quick examples, we’re sure you can think of people in your organisation that might fit into either category.

Effects of attitudes on the rest of the team

A positive attitude is great—but negativity can be a problem. Some effects of negative attitudes behaviour on others include lower productivity, higher rates of absence, less team cohesion and low morale.

Negative attitudes effects

  • Lacklustre performance
  • Unwillingness to work collaboratively
  • Dismal outlook
  • Unwillingness to try new things
  • Reduced energy levels
  • Increased absences
  • Depressive feelings
  • Reduced quality of work
  • Poor customer engagement
  • Difficulty overcoming obstacles

Positive attitudes effects

  • Increased productivity
  • Greater probability of collaboration and teamwork
  • Improved morale
  • Ability to overcome adversity
  • Willingness to think creatively and try new things
  • Willingness to share information and ideas
  • Lower turnover
  • Increased sense of camaraderie
  • Improved customer service

How can I ensure positive attitudes at work?

Negative employee attitudes and behaviours at work can be tiring and stressful to manage. But there are some things you can do which will make dealing with difficult staff much easier:

1. Listen

A bit of a catch-all solution to a lot of problems. Sometimes, negative attitudes arise because someone is under stress, and is finding it hard to cope. Not everyone knows how to ask for help in this case, and they may lash out.

Listen to your teams and watch out for signs of stress—especially in the people who are reacting badly. Job satisfaction will improve if you listen to the employee about their issues.

2. Manage

Weekly catchups, performance reviews and chats are a great way to pick up on and fix negative attitudes. Remember, a negative work attitude isn’t always a staff member’s fault—they could have a lot on their plate, and no way to cope.

So, before you think ‘how do I deal with difficult employees,’ make some changes to the way you’re managing a team. Talk to them more. And as mentioned, listen.

3. Support

After all, if someone has the energy to maintain a bad attitude, they can use that force for good. At first, dealing with a difficult employee can seem, well, difficult.

But once you’ve figured out what’s going on, offering as much support as you can, makes a tremendous difference—whether it’s reducing a workload, changing a role, or even just asking how someone is doing at home.

4. Create a positive working culture

Like attracts like – so if you have a negative outlook and/or company culture, your people may follow suit. Ensure you have a positive, supportive working culture that facilities open conversations, wellbeing initiatives and accommodates to unique needs of individuals.

5. Call out bad behaviour

It’s important to take the employee to one side and discuss their attitude towards work. It can help to identify the cause, or gain clues if they’re being dismissive. After all, if it isn’t addressed early, getting the employee to bounce back from a negative attitude to work can be incredibly difficult.

How an Employee Assistance Programme can support attitudes towards work

It’s not uncommon for employees to feel unable to speak to their line manager about how work may be affecting them. While it’s generally the first port of call, an individual may need some support building up to having a difficult conversation. Our Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) allows your people to connect with a counsellor 24/7, 365 days a year, to discuss mental health concerns that may be affecting them in their professional and personal lives. They can support individuals in approaching difficult conversations, building resilience and help them improve their overall attitude towards work.

Conclusion

Negative attitudes affect employers as well as the employee. It can be something that builds overtime if it isn’t addressed. With our tips, you can spot the signs of increasing negative attitudes towards work and address any problems within your workplace’s control to support the individual before things get worse.
