With everything we've experienced in recent years, it's not surprising that mental wellbeing is now more crucial than ever. Having mental health first aiders in modern workplaces is crucial for creating a supportive and empathetic environment for all individuals.
What is a Mental Health First Aider?
A Mental Health First Aider is as important as a Physical First Aider. MHFA is there to help individuals dealing with emotional stress, anxiety, depression, and wellbeing issues.
You do not want your hard-working people to ever suffer in silence. A MHFAider listens in a confidential space and receives training to spot early signs of poor mental health at work. They can also guide someone to get the right support if necessary.

Reducing the stigma of mental health
The presence of Mental Health First Aid in the working environment helps to destigmatise conversations around mental health. When individuals feel supported, they are more likely to talk openly about any issues.
When an organisation invests in mental wellbeing, it helps create a healthier work environment. It is important not to underestimate the role that a qualified MHFAider plays in your working community. By recognising these first aiders, organisations can promote a culture that shows mental wellbeing is a priority. This will ultimately lead to increased productivity, employee satisfaction, and overall success for your organisation.
How to become a Mental Health First Aider
To become a qualified MHFAider, you need to complete a two-day course. You can do this course either in person or online.
MHFA is the only internationally accredited evidence based MHFA course in England, designed with inclusion and equity at its heart.
Your employees should be allowed to update their skills, just like your physical first aiders. This demonstrates that your organization values both mental and physical health equally. Investing in the refresher course ensures people are confident and competent in their role.
We recommend that MHFAiders attend a Refresher course every three years. Just like physical first aid, updating skills and knowledge allows people to perform this vital role confidently and safely.
