The Different Types Of Employee Counselling

Types of Employee Counselling

Every individual issue will need working through in a different way, here are the counselling options available for this.

Employee counselling is an extremely beneficial feature for both employees and organisations. Offering counselling to employees is an effective way of keeping employees happy, committed, and reliable in the workplace, even if they are experiencing personal stresses or issues. Providing counselling can also be hugely useful in countering the effects of critical incident stress and work related mental health conditions.

Just as each individual issue will be unique, there are different types of employee counselling that you can consider for employees, with each one offering different benefits and being useful for different purposes. If this is something you are interested in and believe the workplace could benefit from, read on to find out more about the types of counselling available.

Types of Employee Counselling

Face-to-face counselling

Face-to-face counselling is the most personal and direct form of counselling, which gives employees the chance to talk to another human in person and get live responses.

It’s useful for employees who are conversationalists and have no issues talking about themselves candidly. This process can take place in a private practice, a confidential area of the workspace, or alternative environments that are conducive to openness.

This type of counselling is also one of the most useful for the counsellors themselves, as it means that they can easily read the body language of employees and learn more about them.

Telephone counselling

Telephone counselling doesn’t require as much organisation as the face to face alternative, as it can be done anywhere, at any time, allowing for a lot of flexibility. In many ways, telephone counselling can be just as effective as face to face counselling, as it still gives employees the chance to speak their mind to a counsellor and hear live responses.

Telephone counselling is also be a better option for more nervous employees, as the partially anonymous nature of it can encourage honesty. Also, as the service can be provided directly to the comfort of their own home, employees are able to relax.

Live chat or email counselling

Live chat or email counselling is an extension of the idea of telephone counselling, further reducing the intensity of the experience and increasing the sense of anonymity.

It can be particularly useful for young or more nervous employees who feel most comfortable typing.

Due to the fact that it can reduce the authenticity of communication, because of the extent of anonymity and the feeling of detachment from the experience, this method is only recommended as a gateway to allow employees to get used to talking about their problems.

This can then lead on to more personal counselling methods such as by telephone or face-to-face.
